Photoshop Skills Development
To develop my Photoshop skills I created a very basic magazine-style front cover using an image of Jarvis Cocker. To begin I uploaded the image to Photoshop and began to alter the colours. To do this I went to Image, Adjustments and then Hue/Saturation. I changed the Hue to -9, Saturation to -6 and Lightness to -11.
Following this, as I wanted to put the masthead behind the main image I then duplicated the layer. I then clicked the 'eye' beside the original layer so that I was only viewing the new one that I had created. After this I used the magic wand to delete the background and then used the earaser to clear it up around the edges. Next, I added a text box which created a third layer and positioned this between the two previous layers which allowed the text to fall behind the image of Jarvis Cocker himself, without being hidden by the background. Finally, I insterted the image of a barcode and re-sized this until I felt it was in proportion to the rest of the cover. I decided to position this in the lower left hand corner of the magazine.

Magazine Proposal
Magazine Proposal
Type of Magazine
My magazine will be a music magazine focusing on the genre of R&B and general popular music, ranging from artists such as Jay Z and Will.I.Am to Lady Gaga. I want my magazine to focus on artists whose image and fashion plays a key role in their popularity and success as their originality sets them apart from other artists in the industry.
Name of Magazine
I am currently undecided on what I will call my magazine.
Audience
The audience of this magazine will be teenagers to young adults, those who would be interested in R&B, popular music and unique fashion. Although this magazine would be suitable for both genders I believe it would appeal more to females simply due to the artists it would feature. I believe this audience would be well suited for this magazine as people of this age want to express themselves and their individuality. It is a time when they feel they no longer have to conform to their parents wishes and can convey themselves in any way they desire through their fashion and behaviour. The artists within this magazine would reflect these attitudes as many of them are viewed as rebellious (e.g. Miley Cyrus and Rihanna) and wear many unusual outfits which express their personality and desire to stand out.
Outlet
This magazine would be available to buy in both supermarkets (e.g. ASDA) and HMV. I have chosen to sell this magazine in supermarkets as many people download music from Itunes as opposed to going to music stores and therefore the sales figures from HMV may not be very high. However, by selling the magazine in supermarkets many more people would buy it along with their weekly shop, quick visit or when going to buy magazines before a long travelling trip.
Necessary Information
The front cover of my magazine will include important information such as the date of issue, issue number, barcode and website.
Selling Point
The selling point of my magazine will be the fact that the artists it focuses on all have a unique and sometimes extreme fashion sense. This would make it stand out from other music magazines as some people may buy it simply for their interest in fashion rather than their music taste, causing an increase in sales.
Theme
My article will be an interview with a female pop artist who has a unique and instantaneously recognisable style. The interview will discuss their up and coming music and also feature on their style, what their inspiration is for fashion, their favourite designers and where they shop.
Images Front Cover
The front cover will consist of one image which will be of the female artist featured in the article.
Images Inside
The contents page will include smaller images of other artists which consitute to articles within the magazine, with the relevant page number ontop. Within the article I will include more images of the artist featured on the front cover with captions which make them relevant to the article.
