Contents Page Construction

I have began constructing the general layout of my contents page on Photoshop simply using the rectangle tool. I have stuck to my colour scheme of red, white and black to keep my magazine looking simplistic and professional.

The 3 black rectangles down the right hand side are where I want the subheadings for my contents list to appear. Due to this, I wanted them all to have exactly the same dimensions and so created the rectangle to the size I wanted then duplicated the layer twice.

I have followed the flat plan I created earlier in order to create this simple outline of my contents page.

My Double Page Spread Article

I have been working on the article I want to appear on my double page spread. It is an interview with the 'artist', Elodie J, who appears on my front cover. I am happy with the below article at the moment however it may be subject to change when I put it onto my double page spread as it may appear as too long or too short.

From a number one album to a break up with her long-term boyfriend - Our interviewer, Joy Osborne, met up with Elodie J to tell us more…

Good afternoon Elodie… Elodie J… What would you prefer?
[Laughs] Just Elodie will do, Joy!

2013 was a big year for you! How do you feel your life has changed?
You’re telling me, emotional rollercoaster more like! It’s changed loads in some respects then none in others. I mean, my music really took off last year, my fanbase has grown and I’m loving every minute of it… but at the same time my mam has helped me remain very grounded. I still love spending time with my family and regular trips to the cinema with my little sister.

Your break-up with your long-term boyfriend, Jamie Pearson, was well documented in the media near the end of last year. How did you cope with that?
[Looks down and plays with fingers] In reality I didn’t. It was really difficult. Break-ups are hard for everyone but having stories, many of which weren’t even true, written about it was something I’d never had to deal with before. I made mistakes. I put too much on social media which was immature and resulted in my words being twisted.

(Image of ripped up Valentine’s Day card with the caption ‘Elodie J posted this image on Twitter following her break-up with Jamie Pearson)

Do you regret the image you posted on Twitter?
Of course. I was upset and in a really low place. I’ve learned to put my frustrations into my music. On the plus side this may help me create a great new album!

[Smirks] Good outlook Elodie! Speaking of albums… ‘The Chase’ climbed straight to No1 in October. What did you do to celebrate?
You know what it is, my mum called to tell me before my manager knew! She’s my number 1 fan. I actually don’t have some crazy party story… I went out for a meal with my family, manager and people from the label. It still feels weird to know I have a Number 1 album! It’s an unbelievable feeling.

What are your plans for 2014?
Oo now that would be telling! [Laughs] I was actually told this morning I’m finally allowed to tell you I’m working on a new fashion range for Topshop! I’m so excited, I absolutely love fashion and have had so much fun working on the designs with the amazing team. It’s still pretty new so my first range will be A/W 2014.

What inspired you to take such a different route?
I’m fascinated by fashion. I have a sewing machine at home and I’m always altering things I buy. You’ve probably noticed I love mixing and matching things that shouldn’t work but somehow do – or at least I hope they do!

Sub-article of ‘Elodie J’s 5 wardrobe necessities’
List of 5 items accompanied by images and followed by the highstreet store they’re available in so readers can get ‘Elodie J’s’ style.

A gold chain – 'I LOVE my gold bling. In my eyes you can never have too much!'
- Beanie hat – 'Both guys and girls have bad hair days. My beanie hat is my go-to item when I can’t be bothered   to do my hair! Although I probably shouldn’t have told you that…'
- Trainers – 'They’re so comfortable, super stylish and ideal for all the travelling I’ve been doing recently.'

I still have to decide upon 2 items for 'Elodie J's 5 wardrobe necessities' and I am going to decide upon these by picking items I have readily available at home or at a friends house in order to take the images.

As a result of the construction I now have to take images of the following:
- A ripped up Valentine's Day card. I am going to take this image on my iPhone as the caption on the image will state that 'Elodie J' posted this image on Twitter. Due to this, I want the image to appear as an image which would be posted on Twitter as opposed to taking it with a high quality camera.
- A gold chain. I believe I am going to use the gold chain which my model is wearing in 'outfit one' of my images.
- A beanie hat
- Trainers

Further Photoshop Skills Development

As I am not incredibly familiar with using Photoshop, I spent some time getting used to the various different ways in which I can edit my photographs. I cut these images out from their original black backgrounds in order to replace them with different ones. As well as this, I added a shadow behind my model and, on the first image, added a gradient onto the background.

I was interested in using the above image for my front cover as I believe it is one of the most aesthetically pleasing images I have taken. However, when I played around with this image on Photoshop, I realised I really liked it with a gradient background. As gradient backgrounds don't usually appear on front covers I believe this would make my magazine appear unprofessional and therefore I may further develop my Photoshop skills and create a neater version of the above image to appear on my double page spread as opposed to my front cover.

Due to this, I then began to use some Photoshop skills on image 4, which could appear on my front cover.

Photograph Choices

Following my photoshoot, I have narrowed down my images to a selection of which I feel are the most aesthetically pleasing and suitable for my magazine. I will include 3 of the following images:

OUTFIT ONE
Image 1

 Image 2
 Image 3
 Image 4
 Image 5
 Image 6

OUTFIT TWO
Image 7
Image 8

OUTFIT THREE
Image 9

I believe that the images taken in 'outfit one' have turned out the best however I would like my magazine to contain variation and so will also include images with different outfits. Currently, I am deciding whether I would prefer a long shot or a mid-shot on my front cover. If I decide upon a long shot I will use image 1, 3 or 6 on my front cover however if I decide upon a mid-shot I will use image 3 or 4.

I believe image 9 will appear on my contents page where as image 7 or 8 may be used on my double page spread. However, I am unsure whether images 7 and 8 will be utilised at all as I am very pleased with the aesthetics of the first 6 images and consequently may use one of them and change the background colour on Photoshop.

My next step is going to be making a final decision on which image I will use on my front cover and begin cutting around it on Photoshop to then create another layer to allow for the masthead to fall behind my model's head.

Despite the fact that I am happy with the outcome of the above images, there were also images taken within my photoshoot session which have not made the final cut such as the ones below:

I feel as though the lighting on the above images is too dim and consequently makes my model's skin appear orange and top look too bright. Due to this I will not be including either of these images within my magazine.

On the other hand, I believe the lighting on this image is too bright as the model was facing the light I had set up within the photography studio. As a result, the lighting on her face appears as too much and ruins the effect of her make-up.

I will also not be including the above image within my magazine as it appears as though my model is mid-blink therefore making this photograph unsuitable.

Finally, this image will also not be used within my magazine as the pose appears unnatural and uncomfortable which I believe is visible on the model's face.

Analysing Previous Student Work

The first magazine I have chosen to analyse is called 'Image'.

To begin, I immediately noticed that the canditate has cut the image out very neatly on Photoshop to allow the masthead to fall behind, something I wish to achieve within my own magazine. As well as this, the images themselves appear very professional as they all have different backgrounds (e.g. brick wall, busy street, backdrop within a studio) and therefore do not appear amateuristic as if all of the images were taken on the same occasion. Furthermore, the simple colour scheme of red, white and black helps to avoid the magazine looking messy and over-crowded. On top of this, the way in which the masthead on he contents page is set upon a black background makes the page appear like it is from a real magazine as I found this was a recurring convention when deconstructing contents pages. Finally, I like the way in which the masthead from the front cover is included on the contents page.

On the other hand, many of the words within the main article are split between lines due to the fact that it is organised into columns and as a result they couldn't fit onto one line. This is not something which would occur so frequently within a real magazine and therefore gives a unprofessional vibe. Similarly, due to this, the word 'manager' appears as 'man- ager' despite the fact that it is all on one like and, once again, this makes the magazine appear unprofessional. Furthermore, spelling mistakes have been made such as the fact that they used the American spelling of 'favourite', 'favorite'. As well as this, the article ends mid-sentence with no indication, such as an arrow, that it continues onto the next page. Finally, I feel that the barcode is unnaturally large and consequently looks out of place and messy.

Overall, I believe this candidate completed the task to a high standard, particularly the front cover and contents page. The images are of a professional standard and the only real issue with it is the article itself.

The second magazine I have chosen to analyse is called 'Talent'.

I do not feel that this candidate has been successful in creating a realistic looking magazine as even from a glance you can tell it appears very amateur. However, I do like their use of an original font for the masthead and feel that they utilised a pull quote effectively on the double page spread.

However, apart from this, the magazine appears as rushed and messy. Firstly, the front cover looks random and disorganised, particularly due to the fact that an image of Eminem is strangely positioned behind an image the candidate would have taken themselves. As well as this, I do not like the background of the front page and contents page, as fading from duck egg blue to white is not a style of background I have came across in any of the magazines I have deconstructed. Furthermore, the stars along the top of the front cover do not fit in with the rest of the page. Not only this, but the star in the top right hand corner has not been cut out of its white background which makes it stand out as unfinished. There is also another image on the contents page which has not been cut out properly as the original background is visible between the 'artists' legs. The images themselves are not of a high quality and I feel is another element which lets the magazine down. Finally, the double page spread appears very unlike a real magazine, mainly due to the use of Comic Sans MS as a font. I do not believe this font creates the impression of professionalism at all and therefore will not be using this font within my own magazine.

Overall, I feel as though this candidate did not spend as much time as possible and necessary to create a professional looking magazine. It is instantaneously recognisable as a piece of student work and due to this I do not believe they would have achieved a high grade.

The final magazine I have chosen to analyse is called 'Shuffle'.

To begin, I like the way in which the coverlines on the front cover vary in size and colour but remain in the same font. This creates an element of fun whilst keeping the magazine structured. As well as this, I like the inclusion of a smaller image on the front cover however this is an image of an existing band and they should have used an image they took themselves. My favourite page within this main task is the contents page. The way in which the headings are set upon a red background follows a convention which I found in many of the magazines I deconstructed. As well as this, I like the idea of including a subscription advertisement on the contents page and competition on the double page spread however I don't find the way in which the candidate included these aesthetically pleasing.

As well as this, the candidate created their own logo with the inclusion of arrows into the masthead. This is an original idea which would set the magazine apart from the rest however, when deconstructing magazines, I did not come across a masthead which was made in this way. Due to this, this makes the magazine appear unprofessional. As well as this, the front cover appears over-crowded and the 'bubble' and heart behind the image appear extremely amateur. Furthermore, the main images on the front cover and double page spread appear messy as they have been cut out in a jagged fashion. Furthermore, the barcode is stretched and as a result does not look realistic. Within this magazine the candidate made grammar mistakes such as missing capital letters on names (e.g. The enemy instead of The Enemy) and spelling mistakes within the main article (e.g. 'devistated' instead of 'devastated').

Overall, I believe this candidate was unsuccessful in creating a realistic looking magazine however they completed some elements to a high standard. Similarly to 'Talent' it is very easy to recognise this as a piece of student work which is something I would like to avoid within my own magazine.

My Magazine

From looking at last years student work I have concluded that it is very easy to fall into the trap of making an amateuristic looking magazine. Despite this, all 3 of the above magazines followed the major convention of positioning the masthead at the top of the front cover and main coverline between half way and the bottom of the page.

I would like my own magazine to look as realistic as possible and therefore not be instantly recognisable as a piece of student work. As a result, I am going to use a high quality camera to take clear and professional looking images. As well as this, I will ensure that my front cover is not over crowded and that I do not include too many colours. Finally, I am going to ensure that I use a small number of fonts and ensure that the font used for the main article is similar to a one I have seen in a real magazine as I do not want it to appear as unprofessional as the one in 'Talent', which used Comic Sans MS.
