Photoshop Skills Development

To develop my Photoshop skills I created a very basic magazine-style front cover using an image of Jarvis Cocker. To begin I uploaded the image to Photoshop and began to alter the colours. To do this I went to Image, Adjustments and then Hue/Saturation. I changed the Hue to -9, Saturation to -6 and Lightness to -11. Following this, as I wanted to put the masthead behind the main image I then duplicated the layer. I then clicked the 'eye' beside the original layer so that I was only viewing the new one that I had created. After this I used the magic wand to delete the background and then used the earaser to clear it up around the edges. Next, I added a text box which created a third layer and positioned this between the two previous layers which allowed the text to fall behind the image of Jarvis Cocker himself, without being hidden by the background. Finally, I insterted the image of a barcode and re-sized this until I felt it was in proportion to the rest of the cover. I decided to position this in the lower left hand corner of the magazine.

  1. Lucy, you have successfully completed the task, using layers to place the masthead behind the main image, adding text and following the set criteria to produce your final image. A detailed write-up of the process is included. The tools you have used here will prove invaluable when it comes to producing your main task, but I would suggest trying to gain more experience on Photoshop to further enhance your skills prior to constructing your magazine.
